O pequeno Rio Carioca deu nome aos nativos do Rio de Janeiro, e por muitos anos foi a principal fonte de água potável para os primeiros navegantes que aqui chegaram assim como principal fonte de abastecimento da cidade.
Nos dias de hoje, talvez poucas pessoas se lembrem ou saibam algo sobre o Rio Carioca, e talvez nem saibam que o termo "Carioca" que distingue orgulhosamente os nativos da cidade do Rio de Janeiro, tem suas origens nas águas de um Rio.
Alguns livros citam que o nome Carioca dado ao Rio vem de uma casa construída em pedra, na foz deste Rio, junto ao mar. Os índios Tamoios, habitantes originais do local que futuramente seria a cidade do Rio de Janeiro, chamavam a casa de pedra de "casa do homem branco" que em linguagem dos Tamoios seria "Carioca".
